The A.I in this game...
It's like the A.I in this game has been made as annoying as possible on purpose.
Not difficult, that's not the right word for it. I still win... Just annoying...

I want to build an army. And I want them to build an army.
If I have a bigger, stronger, better organized army, I want to win.
If they have a bigger, stronger, better organized army, I want them to win.
Either way I'm having fun. But especially on the larger, more open maps this doesn't happen.

In the previous AoE games, if the A.I. made 100 soldiers, they attacked you with an army of 100 soldiers.

In this game the A.I. makes 100 soldiers, splits them up into 10 groups of 10 soldiers and attacks with little groups all over the map at the same time.
They ignore turrets and armies as much as possible and instead focus on villagers!

Meanwhile I'm just running around with my army to clean up the mess.
It's like a game of Wack-a-Mole. Every time time they stick out their head, I wack it back down.

I want big, massive battles. Not tiny little groups that act like pesky mosquitoes.
I want them to try to beat my army. I don't want them to try to make me rage quit.

I don't just want to win. I want to have fun doing it.
Why doesn't the A.I. work towards a massive attack like in the previous games? Why does it have to be 200 small attacks?

What if rage quitting the human players are one of the few strategies that the A.I managed to learn with the supposed "machine learning" feature?

I agree. AI is rubbish

i also noticed they attack you 2 mins into the game with just a couple of soldiers, i agree with you, that kind of stuff is barely fun, its just tedious

So what you are saying is that the AI does exactly what its supposed to do(to maximize chances of doing damage) and you don't like it? Here is a little tip for you, that is what a human would try to do just as well. Attacking in different locations means you also need to split and it could very well do a lot of damage before you can defend. Going for the villagers, aka harassing is also a valid tactic that you can find in multiplayer battles. If you don't like it, you have something called walls, trust me, its there in the build menu...

Just try playing multiplayer and expect people to just mass an army and a-move as you a-move... I don't think you are going to win a lot of games.

If only they had walls in this game... Oh wait.

Was waiting for this response lol.
Clearly you didn't read the part where I said this is NOT difficult, just annoying.

How is the A.I. going to defeat me if I have a group of 50 horses and they keep attacking with 10 separate groups of 10 soldiers?
It's just wacking at mosquitoes. You can easily kill them but they're annoying as ♥♥♥♥.

In every previous AoE game the A.I. would train units to create a massive army and attack when that army was ready. Especially in later stages of the game they would create MASSIVE armies.

Now if you survive the first 20 minutes of a game the A.I. basically stops making an effort and they'll just throw little groups at you until you decide to march in to their base to destroy it.

I can only agree, attacking on different places and going after villagers is a valid tactic you can see in different multiplayer RTS games. Although it usually ends with some kind of ultimate fight scene (or several ones) t
I am not sure how good it is implemented because skirmish games are crushing for me, while campaign missions are rock stable

It increases the odds of doing damage then if he would mass a huge army and a-move the army. After a certain skill level and unless the AI cheats like crazy its damn hard to make it win over humans (deepmind or AlphaStar AI for SC2). So what I am telling you is that the AI the best it can do to win and the tactics it uses now, are superior to what you expect it to do. If you want a real challenge, you need to fight real players but those are also using this annoying tactics. I've been playing harder difficulties and it does make larger armies (well as large as you can get in this game).

PS. If you are talking about late game and you don't have walls for AI splitting and harrasing workers... No idea what to tell you.

Between those who say ia sucks and those who say it's too strong.

More or less the same problem with all of Relic's RTS games, from Dawn of War to Company of Heroes 2. What I've noticed is there seems to be a variable that controls the "attack group size" and if you notice the attacking groups are different sizes for each difficulty.

Or maybe we can just go back to the theory that the "machine learning" of the A.I decided it would be best to annoy you to surrender and make you play against real players.:steamhappy:

The AI is broken and does not pose any danger on the maximum difficulty level. I hope in the next patch the AI will be fixed.

I have to agree lol. Pending on difficulty, the AI can challenge you. They’ll be aggressive and rush and I’ve seen people quit mid game after their town is destroyed, I won’t say they’re great, but I do find the AI capable until you can learn its tendency (which is the ultimate flaw of any AI, they’re programmed only to do so much so eventually players will figure out how they work and consistently beat them). Rushing them breaks them for example.

That said OP: if you want to fight big AI armies then let them build a wonder and you’ll see them dog pile their armies to defend that, I know it’s not the same as them attacking you but at least you’ll get your big battles.

Thanks for the advise! That's actually a very good idea.

I'll have to correct myself a little bit.
Yesterday was a good day and I learned some new things that pretty much satisfied my desires for big battles.

Yesterday, for the first time I placed against the Delhi.
At first it was the same nonsense as with the other A.I. opponents. Small little groups attacking from all sides. No big battles, just running around to kill the little raider groups.

But it didn't take long before they started attacking with groups...of elephants!!!
And because of the enormous HP pool of these beasts, the battles take longer, and are more interesting. So it feels like a big battle. Something to prepare for.

Absolutely love playing against the Delhi. Finally an opponent that feels worthy.
