Just play a lot. If you want to learn skirmish game play players and not AI, since computers tend to do weird stuff.

Think that everyone is exploring the game right now, so it's the best time to jump into multiplayer. Watch pro-players streams if you want some general guidelines, but they are also looking for the best strategies, no one has a clear way to play, is yet to be discovered.

1. Art of War challenges.
2. Mastery challenges for each civ.

Yea it can be more similar to AoE II but still its quite different, civs and eco works differently so the bestbest strategies are yet to be developed. ofc if you played AoE II you will have better intuitions (i tell it as an old AoE II meta player myself) but it's not like you become strategy god.

Really, pop into multiplayer, right now there are a loooooot of beginners just exploring the game, you may realize that you are much better than you believe

Learn build orders , watch high level replay and look how build orders work.
You can get to Diamond level of play just by getting your build orders together , because knowing what to do in essence translates to speed and APM.

In other words Knowledge is APM or directly translates to. Which is what players most often complain they're lacking.

On conceptual level you can look for Pro Guides , for instance Hera shows the importance of micro in couple of videos In Aoe2 and I'm sure he demonstrates other concepts in other videos , it's not AoE4 obv because game just came out but it helps with the study. You get a feel what goes into the learning process.

Other than that you can reach for conceptual knowledge into other games or watch how pro goes trough learning process. Personally I like Day9 System of learning.
He has whole library of content related to Starcraft 2 , he learned a bunch of AoE 2 recently and played Aoe 4 games too. But anyone with a bit experience should be beneficial for you , It's just that Day9 has backlog of 15 yrs of Guides in form of Day9 dailies.

you can just play the campaign, then do art of war and skirmishes to properly nail down playing your civ and learning what other civs can do. then you can play against other players or watch some build orders/strats online if you'd like to get even better.

after that, it's just all practice.

Start with the Art of War, then Mastery, then Watch Spirit of the Law and Aussie Drogo and Italian Spartacus Guides, Go to Pro Tactics Hera, Viper etc.

Learn to use hotkeys and control groups. Develop a consistent Hotkey setup, e.g. 1 and 2 for Units 3 for Towncenters, 4 for production etc. This will help you develop a solid macro play to keep up with prodcution and units.

I wouldn't rely on watching alot of videos. Since you actually got to do the tips/strategies in practice. I would focus on practicing a build order. A booming build order speficially since that is easier to do then say a rush build order I find.

Art of War is great because its interactive and you're not just watching a video, hoping you remember what was said.

* Keep making villagers from your town center with NO interruptions. Stop when you have a strong economy.
* Don't get pop capped.
* Learn to age up to feudal age quickly. Learn build orders.
* Learn to rush, it's effective. You'll also learn more by playing many short games rather than a single long game.
* Learn counters
* Learn hotkeys, you can find them at control settings
The ones I currently use are: (Some could be different on your keyboard layout)
Hotkeys for placing buildings and training units, you can see them on the buttons.
[H] Town center
[.] Select idle villager
[,] Select idle military unit
[-] Select scout
[F1] Select all military buildings.
[Ctrl][Shift][C] Select all military units.
[Ctrl][0-9] Create unit group
[0-9] Select unit group
[A] Attack move
* Beat every difficulty of the AI, from easy to hardest.

exactly, watching a lot of pros videos doesn't make you a pro. it's all about practice and constant muscle memory reactions which become fluid and faster the more you play.
i would say do practice against AI because you can control their strengths/weaknesses before the game starts as you yourself get better.
learn to dominate AI and then move onto multiplayer vs humans because as another comment said "Think that everyone is exploring the game right now" which is horribly wrong, this game is very much like AOE2 which is still going strong after over 20 years, and same people that played that are going to be playing AOE4 so keep that in mind when you vs other humans.
