Spears and crossbows seem to work well as far I have experienced.

Elephants need some tweak. They are too powerful. They are creatures like us. They do not have titanium covered bodies :papyrus:
agreed

I've yet to play against elephants but one time I saw them in action I was not impressed. Beaten by ranged units as usual. Spears make simple enough fodder to slow them down.

Elephants are expensive too in both cost and population. So for every elephant you can have 3 other units or a siege unit.

Sounds like you have an economic issue.

Spear spam, hand gunner spam oand cannons will work, alternatively if it’s only 2-3 unsupported elephants you can simply mob them with chaff cavalry and knock them out; you may lose half your cavalry but in terms of resource cost you’ev come out on top. I say chaff cav like upgraded mongol light cav, not French knights!

They don't seem to like group of archers, unless they're unprotected.
The second archer unit seems effective in killing them, the first one could be cheaper and scare them on long distance.

Massing against 4-5 elephants is like suicide.
So enough to stay alive, send in several intervals, while archers take them down.
They have a sort of stampede effect it seems, which likely needs to be balanced.

The AI likes to send monks after them, so make a priority to kill them,

Scaring off the elephants do a lot, especially if you deal with several AI enemies on harder levels.

They don't seem to like areas with a fort next to a wall and when you put up enough towers.
The AI who chose to push out 4-5 cannons against one wall section, do however take down that area more easily.

Also an AI is buffed, you might not see them as often i multiplayer, but the AI use them in groups of several elephants and will as buffed, easily produce new ones.

It could be that they also have extra staff buffed to them, on harder ai levels.

+1 for archers / gunners
I don't think elephants needs to be nerfed, they were a force to be reckoned with.
Also, don't forget that elephants, for most civilisations were really scary, so I think the fact they were scary is transcribed here with more armor against infantry I think?

But all in all, any ranged unit... tested springalds, wasn't too bad.

Just be prepared if you fight against the delhi sultanate, don't organize your troops as if you were fighting just any civilization.

I used a hypersonic missile (like the chi coms have) and sent one right up the old back door. Talk about a tusk straightener!
