What's this game actually for? E-Sports?
After complaining about lack Asian campaigns, I complain again for game itself finally.
I don't know what's to enjoy or where to get fun as a casual player at all.

I know why I don't care about multiplayer, because it's too competitive.

As a 33 years old one, when I finish my work and back home for a game, what I really need is relax and fun, not a game that need longtime practice to win.
If I really need a competitive game, I would choose chess which truly rely on strategy and skill, not a game which written as Real "Strategy" game but focus on rapid mouse clicking or we called APM.

So what I can expect from this one? It's campaigns, historical flavor mechanics, interesting story or some free choice like Civilization, while AOE4 offers none. As I said before, only rise of Moscovy is a new campaign, others are all old, too old for an old player like me.

I don't know why people are so addicted to E-sports, I care not since it's only joined by top players, nothing to do with me. Maybe a RTS game should count on E-sports since it's RTS. So my disappointment is just my own disappointment, but I really want to see a RTS game which is a "game", not a task.

Edited:

After watch most replies, I'm sure this game isn't for E-Sports neither, so what is actually this game for?

I know this game lack ranked games, but it still designed for multiply games for sure. You cant imaging a singleplayer game has such strange design - you have fun only if you win.
Every second in gameplay, I build, I train, I march, I battle, under repeated clicking. What can I get? "You Win" on screen, just two words.
Or someone think in this game, building, training, marching or battling is fun? How could it be?

I also changed title, to see who could give an answer.

They're using the multiplayer base to try and get back into the headspace of video gamers as a whole and ride the momentum of leader boards. Into.. something. The big patch in December? Free updates? DLC next spring? The stats are obviously over or under tuned across the board in nearly every civ you can find an exmaple.

No one really talks about it because every other major video game genre has already normalized this game design ideology, so it just becomes the norm. dota crawled, so that league could walk, so that rocket league could sprint, so that overwatch could fly, so that apex could go to space. The people dont really care what game it is, as long as there's pvp.

Its pretty obvious a lot of aoe4 was deigned around competitive play, pro-players, and multiplayer.

So its a strange situation to be in, when the life-blood of the series has been equally upheld by a.) competitive scene over the past 20 years, and b.) the solid game mechanics and map generation leading to endless ai skirmishes for the casual player that make up 50% or more of the playerbase.

So when the newest game focuses on one over the other, it can come off as confusing. I honestly think aoe4 has a lot of great things about it, but its missing some key quality of life features that have been established as common place among RTS games, let alone its own predecessors.

The only specific individual mechanics i have a complete distaste for is the fact that ranged units have 100% accuracy, and microing can be extremely difficult because of the saturation levels of player color on unit models coupled with the over use of the beta-looking-see-through yellow light makes some encounters and just overall aesthetic of the game very visually cluttered.

This is an entry level RTS game for me and I've had an extremely easy time compared to the attempts I've made at other games in multiplayer and I've loved the experience here so far. There is no crazy microing so far or anything else others have done in other games that I hated.

this game cant be for esports, they released it unfinished, unbalanced, unoptimized and without a ranked system.

MP will start dying quickly, i really wanted to buy it and play MP, but ill have to wait and see if they can make a miracoulous recovery. I doubt it, for MP games first impressions are very important.

That's different from my feeling, maybe I dont fit RTS.

Gaming isnt meant to be for relax and fun, it is meant for challenge, apprentice and having fun understanding and mastering the mechanics. In better words it is meant to keep your brain in shape.

If you are looking for relax and fun in gaming there are plenty Sony exyclusives, or adventures on rails that you can "play".
I heard they have Netflix level good stories. Your brain should be in a lethargic state for sure afterwards.
Have fun.

Sick of this relax and fun after work ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

You know they are totally different games, not an aoe game.
You refer to keeping brain in shape, that's what I also like, so I play chess. It's of a model that "you met a problem, you use your brain to solve this problem and leave a new one to your opponent".
However, aoe4 and other RTS games are of another model that "you met a problem, you run as fast as you could to survive it, and wait for next such problem". It has a different feeling indeed.

You're simply looking at the wrong game, you should play turn based strategy games not RTS.

While I agree with everything else you said ("RTS" games like age of empires have basically zero strategy), Chess is a terrible counter-example.

Chess relies on memorization and game knowledge, not on strategy. There is no strategy where there is no variance. There are better strategy games out there anywhere you look.

Slower-paced RTS games or other TBS games would be a better choice, for actual strategy.

The game has no micro, at all, so no, it is not for Esports.

Yeah, or just slower, less click-festy and more strategic RTS.

I do recommend Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients

So, why are you looking at a multiplayer, exactly? Every multiplayer game is, by definition, ultra competitive, and requires a good amount of practice and game knowledge, otherwise zoomies will eat you alive. If you want relax and fun you should play single player games
MisterSpock Oct 30, 2021 @ 4:23am
Its suppost to be. It doesnt have ranked atm
and performance and hotkey are not sufficient to be a esport title. Even panning camera via mouse doesnt work properly
Agent Oct 30, 2021 @ 4:25am
The graphics are definitely aimed for esports. Apparently pro's need giant units and weapons to identify them. Blind as a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bat.

Anyway, for more casual gameplay the new Settlers game will be more catered for that. This game is very barebones when it comes to singleplayer content and sandbox. Quite disappointing, but modders will quickly fix that. As they always do.
MisterSpock Oct 30, 2021 @ 4:28am
It does have good gameplay/mechanics. but everything else is like rockHead mentions bare bone. It let it look like a early access.
I feel very bad for the programmers and developers which did the core part of the game.
