Issues with the cover art and Feminist agenda
I'm looking at the cover art and I'm perplexed. The most prominent figure is a female, presumably Joan of Arc.

Joan of Arc played an important, albeit small and brief, part in French history. She had a part in the campaign of earlier AoE games.

But for a game mostly about war and defense, could they not have created cover art that more appropriately portrayed strength, aggression, tactics, and bravery? Not to say Joan of Arc wasn't these things, but when I think of war and tactics, I do not by default think of a 16 year old girl from France.

And although she may have her own sub campaign in this game (I don't know; I haven't played it), is there not another historical figure that would be a more exciting, recognizable, and (let's be honest) stronger character to depict prominently? Genghis Khan conquered must of the ancient world and was a brilliant tactician and warlord. Yet his depiction is relegated to a small portrait at the bottom of the art.

Could they not have come up with something that actually encompasses war better than a huge picture of Joan of Arc?

Why are companies pandering to women when women will probably only make up a small fraction of people who play this game?

It's not just this game, but I see many other games bend over backwards to portray women in cover art. The Battlefield games come to mind. Sure, because when I think of World War 1 and 2, I always think of women lobbing grenades and manning machine guns in the trenches.

This silliness needs to stop. Cover art should be tailored to the game itself and the people who play it. Not to some fanciful notions of sexual equality or a feminist agenda.

Are we that sensitive now, that cover art matters that much?

Clearly, this seems pretty lame.

I don't really care. But yeah, you got a point. I still think AoE having Joanne of Arc is not really pandering, because we all played her campaing in AoE2 and it's familiar. This is not the same as a woman in the cover of Battlefield.

Guess this man forgot about the old burger commercials that sold the burger with a sexy woman straddling over cars and other objects showing off assets.
The art is meant to belittle the males, that's why they elevated her head above them and made it bigger.

Are you implying that women are inferior to men?

Half of world's population consists of women and a very large part of the gaming population are female. They have a right to feel represented in such a beloved franchise as Age of Empires.

Thousands of women have accomplished crucial things in war and famine, and yet women have been marginalized and underrepresented in RTS games and video game covers.

With all the sexist scandals in the gaming industry, the accomplishments of women must be elevated and highlighted. We all have an obligation to make women feel welcomed and included in gaming.

"Inferior" is such a sweeping term it's impossible to actually talk about. Men and women are different, not inferior or superior to each other in general. Are men generally far more physically powerful and suited for combat? Yes.

I really don't care what characters grace the boxart as long as they look medieval

Women are physically weaker than men - that you equate that to being inferior so you have to bend reality is down to you, stop either falling for or propagandising this lame marxist trend.
Yeah, whats up with women being on covers? Next thing you know we will see Lara Croft on the game cover for Tomb Raider....oh wait. /s
