Not really a weird obsession. These are games with body visible that are pretty damn popular:
Dying Light 1 and 2
Far Cry 5, New Dawn, and 6
Wolfeinstein
Indiana Jones and Great Circle
KIngdom Come Deliverance 1 and 2
Avowed
Cyberpunk 2077
STALKER 2
Metro Exodus
All of these are first person games. DOOM, Call of Duty, and Bethesda games are the only ones I really know of that don't have body visible in recent memory.
Playing as a floating camera was acceptable in the early 2000s. But we're closing in on 2026 now. We have the technology to be able to render and animate bodies in first person. But even then, Dark Messiah Might and Magic had a fully rendered body in first person released in 2006.
