help please stuck and confused

To progress and follow the quest to find the Palamedes Shield you need to go to cuanacht which I can't seem to go tht way because the giant gate is shut . i sided with the knight and have most quest completed other than little things like moms pie and creed but i cant seem to get past the north or south gates
