It was a battleaxe. Pressing E to interact with the blacksmith caused it to unsheathe and attack him. Twice.
Never had any weapon attack with E unless it's a shovel or a mining pick.
When you go to chop wood it equips your best battle axe that you meet the requirements for instead of equipping the wood chopping axe. That's probably to let you know that you only need one but it can result in accidentally attacking npc's.
After chopping wood I advise putting the axe away AND switching to another weapon so you don't accidentally chop stuff like the original version of the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz (his tragic/horror backstory is in the novel but was omitted from the film).
That's interesting, but I guess it makes sense.
I think we'd all prefer being able to rebind, but I guess here the workaround would be to swap to other weapons.
