You really should try using some mods unless you don't know how. If that's the case it's really easy to do most of the time. I understand some of your points but I think you're looking at ut the wring way.
Yes a game should not need mods to be good but even the best games become stale after a while. So you end up with a game you love but you've played it so much it's like watching the same movie over and over.
Mods allow you to make the game you love even better at that point. Plus some games are great but have something that drives you nuts. Why miss out on a game you might enjoy except for one frustration, mod it out.
Example: I've been playing elderscroll and other video games for a long long time. I get the encumbrance thing and the lockpick thing but I'm just not doing that anymore. There are games out there that I would love to play but I'm not doing those things, so I don't buy em or play em. And I am never ever playing inventory tetras. To me that's just stupid. I quit playing scum because of it.
One more thing. If you don't like em, don't use em. Just because a games moddable doesn't mean YOU have to use them. Surely you don't want to stop other gamers from using something just because YOU don't like it, right?
Adding more houses with more guards would make the world look more alive, also a few more tents and clan members at the temple .
maybe even add houses in the water since the sunken village looks abandoned and not sunken.
