It's the same "wide as an ocean, shallow as a puddle" affair with Tainted Grail. Only this time the ocean isn't even really wide.
If you're coming to the game based on those reviews (Mortismal, Cohh, Wolfheart - plus lots of others who I honestly think have integrity, even though I don't always agree with them) you're going to be disappointed. I don't think they're doing the devs or the game any favors, tbh.
You can keep Vin alive, one of the other caskets in the tomb has a child's body in it. You can take that and lie to him that Denholm is not his father.
i still find it super odd though that if you dont find this the quest just ends without any
acknoledgement or dialogue option with denholm, all the npc just pretend like the quest never happened if you dont find this childs body
The ending was bit underwhelming indeed. As the Devs are experimenting with branches (some quests having really nice and surprising twists depending on player response) which do have an actual impact and offer interesting options for RPing, it would have been nice to for example telling Denholm that he might have a son still & Vin showing the skeleton - which would be best for the crows.
