That is, the actual stat increase (not the +1 etc name moniker) may go up each upgrade for a few upgrades, then it'll take two, maybe more as you go on, upgrades to see a (visual, text) rise, and so on.
I was guessing the % multiplication forumla (or whatever) that applies to upgrades sometimes is small enough for it not to make a noticeable on-item stat increase, just like the zero weight inventory items. EDIT: so you need to spend resources to upgrade 10 times (example) to notice a .1 text difference on the item
eg, yes, it can get really expensive to get past +5/+6 or so, most of the time.
The gold upgrade cost does stop increasing at some point, but I can't remember at what level of upgrading that happened.
Just noticed that at some point that it was costing me a constant 60k gold each upgrade.
