Two handed + heavy armor
I had terrible problems with medium armor, one handed + shield.

So I respecced into heavy and two handed - and it´s pretty vicious! Just...are there some cons later on? ¨

I´ve read summons are good to have to distract enemies as secondary - which might be viable even later on.

Any thoughts, please?

There are insane weapons later on (ignore block...). Shift + attack runs with heavy weapons, fully perked (both two-handed and relevant armor perks) will roflstomp all enemies.
I also encountered this same problem. I was making a shield based character and it was so frustrating to play. just feels like you have no survive ability or control over the battle which is pretty opposite of what shields are supposed to do.

My first attempt so far being hunter (ish) using bow + 2 x daggers, occasionally magic and medium armor relying on sneaking, thought me one thing - save before each encounter :), I am too weak yet of course.
From what I've read so far - the game is way easier being a mage and quite tough going full melee.
yeah my experience says IT'S extremely hard as a full on melee lol. can't get anywhere without exhausting my healing supplies and by that i mean potions cause all the food is over time healing that usually isn't fast enough in melee to keep you alive. so it sucks lol

Thanks for your insights, guys! :)

Funny thing is - in different thread I mentioned Enderal. I had the same. Exact. PROBLEM!

One handed was simply not enough and shield didn´t help at all. So I went two-handed+plate+ blood magic. So I was effectively blood knight (or vampire knight, while something similiar is even in Elder Scrolls Online). Then the game started to be fun and effective.

So maybe as second slot use summons and third slot that leech spell.

This might be effective build...theoretically...I think x)
I play 2H + Heavy armor and it's been wonderful. Specced into Armor tree at first to max the defense bonuses and get % damage from armor on weapon. It's smashing most things in Act 1 with minimal difficulty.

You still have to dodge and time your attacks but you won't need to block or parry.

Same experience so far (lvl 30 two-handed (hammer) / heavy armor). I used a lot of armor perks, both to boost melee damage (+ percentage of armor value) as well as damage reduction and perk negation perks. Also have mostly pumped strength and endurance attribute. Even bosses are annoyed that they can't really hurt me.

Some shields are absolutely bonkers strong, but it does detract from the sword and board playstyle a bit. There's a shield that shoots out a wind crescent on shield bash, dealing more damage if you've blocked recently. That shield combined with the shields deal 3x damage perk does absolutely INSANE area damage from honestly really high range, it practically turns you into a caster that uses stamina.

with the two handed life steal perk, a blood sucker potion and the lock stamina at 100% potion, you become unstoppable for 30 sec.

I have been playing using dual wield plus magic with an emphasis on Stamina management and dodge upgrades. I use magic for ranged attacks and summoning and dual wielding with dodging for melee fighting, Working pretty well for me so far and really enjoying it.

Interesting, I am spanking the hell out of the highest difficulty with 1-h + magic (usually blood). I'm full battle mage and loving it. Was rough-ish early, but been sprinting through since.

Maybe I should try the 2h approach next :)
