Veteran Mode puts you on "SURVIVAL MODE" (hardcore permadeath mode) whether you select the "SURVIVAL MODE" box or not.
My 3 day weekend is now ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable.

sounds like someone isn't a veteran

Thats strange because I was just playing Vet and didnt have that happen. Try starting on normal mode than changing to veteran in the option menu under Game, doing that will insure survival never triggers as im pretty sure you need to choose survival at game start.

Sorry, but I did extensive testing to make sure what I said was accurate and I'm way too pissed off to do any testing right now. I refuse to lose any more progress. I would never attempt a hardcore run until I had previously cleared the game...

I will agree though that doing Hardcore has a big problem of the Asylum having no bonfire which.... I believe means you just get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ if you die. Made worse by you being your weakest at the asylum and its easy to die, ESPECIALLY on Veteran.

Veteran mode assumes you are aware of how lethal it will be with you and that you know to abuse everything you have from spells, consumables, melee, bows ect. I have 180+ hours and even I dont know if I would want to run a No-Death mode in a game like this where a Bear can suddenly kill you even 25 levels after you find them lol

No it doesn't....? I'm on Veteran. Did you click the survival button?

I checked it multiple times, testing both checking the box and making sure it was not checked then letting myself die to the first guard. Either way, you lose the ability to reload from a checkpoint, you lose all progress and have to start a new game. I refuse to start on a lower difficulty and then raise it, even if that's a viable work around. The devs need to take some accountability for this.

Must have somehow glitched for you. I selected veteran mode and didn't have this problem.

Thanks, I'll verify my files and try again tomorrow. I'm too pissed off at losing 4 hours of progress when I did not want to play on hardcore to begin with.

It absolutely does not. Ever. I have tested it multiple times tonight doing anything I can to trigger it. You have to manually select it. Did you play a pre 1.0 patch?

I tested it a few hours ago as I stated earlier after installing the newest version. It absolutely does. Don't be so quick in insist someone is wrong, that's how you get egg on your face.

Childish incredulity.
To OP:
I'm sorry, but you are wrong.
Since I am playing on Veteran, but did not die yet, I was courious and tested it out.
I created new character selected Veteran. Survival UNCHECKED.
Started into Prologue and let the first guard kill me.

Two possibilities now.
1. You possibly had autosave disabled and forgot to create at least one manual save.
In this case you have no last checkpoint and you have to start a new game.
Since I play with autosave disabled, I cannot say when an autosave is created in the prologue.
2. You created at least one save (auto or manual). You will die, but the game loads the last save.

You are quite right. Claiming something so stupid while a bunch of people are telling you that you are wrong is incredibly childish. I sure hope you at least figured out traffic lights by now.

These responses truly are proof that gamers are mostly disgusting people. You're crabs in a bucket. I could have simply made a video showing my up-to-date installation and all the test cases I tried, and then every one of the incredulous crabs see my receipts but not one would apologize. They would instantly shift to claim it "it doesn't matter, it will get patched".

So now for the devs refusing to take responsibility for their screw up putting people like me in this situation, I won't be changing my negative review. It can just hang over them like a scarlet letter forever. An honest, admitted mistake is no big deal, but covering it up knowingly and then watching your player base who took the time to report it get disrespected for it is not forgivable.
