This is what I am playing now. Spells and occasional dagger thrust. You need to kite and reposition during fights though. Can't sit and blast (at least not early game).
you can use 1 hand sword , axe or spear and use spell in 2nd hand . you can go full caster too or full melee or range . you have like 5 slots for different weapons

You certainly can if you don't mind dodging mostly. Spells at the beginning are kinda meh in terms of power when compared to everything else. Later on I'm honestly not sure, so not really fair to say whether magic is good or bad in he game, but so far I'm not too impressed.

Magic is very powerful... eventually if you put enough points into Spirituality. Thing is, to do a proper Battlemage, you also will need endurance and strength leading into a multiple attribute problem later down the road. My suggestion, would be put a one handed weapon in the right hand and a leech spell in the left..

Spells have +1/+2 and etc just like gear. On start they suck, like really, good luck to win some boss fights with them. After time and perks - it's better. The main stuff with mage - more different spells to play with, you can even turn enemies to cheese. But when mage become better, mine two handed weapon become devastating. Pretty much yeah. I'd say full warrior is easiest mode, but as always way straightforward.

Went with a Blood Leach ability atm with a dagger. (I usually go by the old-fashioned trope of magic-users using only Magic, staffs and daggers)
Pretty fun so far, but only in the beginning stages though.

Been wearing the Spellslinger armor and using Arcanist sword while using the lightning spells and most things have died very quickly. You can get the lesser linghtning spell(forgot exact name) from Jann in the Horns for 400g.

Combat is kinda similar to Skyrim in that you can have a weapon on one hand and a spell in the other, or go double spell. But there's differences too such as how the stamina balance is very soulslike.
Thanks for the replies guys :)

As usual with this type of game, magic is completely broken, meaning that when skilling for caster & some fitting equip you can go full Bethesda and nuke
Magic is the most OP style.

You need endurance no matter what.
There are ways to buff your melee outside of strength.
And there's a lot in practicality's tree.
You don't need the associated stats to get perks from what I can tell...

Also there are staves that scale with spirituality, so you can melee as a mage.
