PRE-RELEASE DISCUSSION Dead as Dreams Quest Dissapointed
PRE 1.0 Discussion
This is a fairly early level quest, the main Necromancer's name being Yorath. From what I have experienced you can handle this quest two ways. Either immediately jumping him and killing him, or actually convincing him to self delete. The latter being more interesting and hilarious. However I reloaded the save to see if there would be any difference.

And there is! You get more loot fighting him instead of the humorous options that involve talking? Where does all his loot go when he turns himself into a zombie? I think you should still be able to get the same reward by completing the quest using speech, as the fight is not hard to begin with anyways.

Yeah, not only do you miss out on the loot, but if you convince him to leave and change his ways, you lose the items he carries, as well as access to the necromancer's burial tomb, which has some good items.

I've learned for every new character you meet, quick-save, kill them and see what they carry. Sometimes you can find overpowered items that are not obtainable otherwise.

Unfortunately, the way it is right now on .09, it is pretty much always better to pick violence over peace when solving problems in the game. You get more loot.
Yeah, hope this gets addressed in the 1.0 patch. It's a shame if the devs make a speech route that is really whitty and shows a lot of passion, only for most players opting towards a murder hobo playstyle just because the game rewards that more.
In the full release 1.0 you can get all his loot from his undead corpse (the permanently dead corpse).
My two cents, its counterintuitive to me that you get rewards that fit a necromancer/caster if you ask no questions, instead attack immediately because you're supposed to go there to end the undead problem..
Whereas if you go the friendly route and (try to) HELP the necromancer become even BETTER at necromancy, doing the opposite of what you were originally supposed to do, you end up missing out on all the necromancy arsenal. Sure, Huardoc gives you the corpse explosion spell and tells you to check back later for more stuff but I dont trust it to unload Yoraths stuff onto you. Magic and necromancy enjoyers get the most fleshed out story but the absolute worst rewards which is kinda ironic. In the end you still have to murderhobo your way to the loot. If its necessary its not fun >:(

If you go friendly route you will get sh.. and that is a MAJOR disappointment.

So, he's a zombie now, and the servant says something that he will be fuzzy for some time and will take care of him in the meanwhile.

If I don't kill him, eventually he will be "normal", or something?

Edit: Also, where I can find the Key to the Inner Crypt? A cell near the entrance

OK. resolution to this quest is a bit of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥....

If you talk to the Necromancer and convince him leave you get ♥♥♥♥♥...
If you convince him and turn into zombie you get ♥♥♥♥♥...
If you convince him and turn into zombie and then kill him, you get his loot but no access to the crypt.
If you go and straight kill him then you get all his loot plus the key to secret crypt with some additional loot (a shield), a book with recipes for bombs, a spell (I think it's the same that drops from Necromancer).

So it looks like it is better to just annihilate everything that moves without even talking to anybody. If you start a conversation there is a high chance that you will just talk yourself out of the reward.

It's a shame really... Now instead of "playing" the game the way I like I will be just mudering everything...

Yeah, that's kinda my main gripes. I'm playing version 1.0 now, and I hope other quests aren't like this. Being a murder hobo doesn't exactly make for an engaging experience.
OP, please amend your chosen answer which is no longer true since 1.0.

I tested all the options:
- kill him: armor, magic staff, journal, soul salvage & skeleton summon spells + access to crypt (bomb recipe, magic shield, corpse explosion spell)
- turn into zombie and kill: armor. staff, journal and the 2 spells on his body, no access to crypt (but huardoc gives you the corpse explosion spell), huardoc says he may have more items later
- convince him to leave: magic wand. the 2 spells + access to crypt

other things:

- no reason not to kill him after he turns into a zombie, huardoc dialogue does not change, you just miss the armor, staff and 2 spells.

- Killing huardoc does not give you the key to the inner crypt.

- There's also the burning ember spell and recipe for revenant armor that you can get on his body (zombified or not), but the former is everywhere and the latter you get with the blacksmith's quest so who cares.

- Maybe if you convince him to become a healer or an alchemist you can find him later as a merchant? Not counting on it, and not counting on him selling the armor, but you never know.

So in essence, I'd recommand killing him if you want the armor (which is really not great, you probably have better options by that point) or the staff, or convincing him to leave if you really want the wand. That may change depending on if he appears as a merchant or if zombifing him makes huardoc give you other items.

I think I'll let him leave (as a healer, the dialogue seems better) and will report back if he appears later.

There, I edited the post to make it abundantly clear that it's a pre-release post. The original answer by Lawrence was the perfect answer, and I refuse to change that. So I edited the post to make that abundantly clear. The only people that can't understand this are those that can't be bothered to read, so rest assured all is well. If people still want to discuss this Yorath in 1.0, then they can just make a new post about it.
I don't see this as a problem. Quests providing different rewards/items depending on how you complete them is good. It gives actual meaning to your choices rather than just changing a few lines of dialog in the quest.
