This game needs a lot of works to be optimal for the difficulty they are presenting the player with
Agreed, but not too far along both become viable.
It's almost like the tutorial dungeon you need a level 10 player to start with, to have access to try out the different styles . And then when you are killed on the beach , you start at level 2 and start your full character build from there.
I can see this but I think an even better solution (though it may be too late now).. Is to allow for a custom start. It is clear they are inspired by or copying Oblivion in terms of the lock picking game. So why not take the extra step and do the custom start Oblivion has? Where you pick the skills you want
I think that if players were able to have a start that is custom fitted to their play style, that would likely help them progress
