Keep going with the other parts of the main quest. Technically it doesn't complete in Chapter 1...

He tells you in that final conversation that there remains another piece of him to become whole, and then the card pops up telling you that you've completed the current main story. So you're done with that branch of quest.

in the north of the map there is a big wooden structure that goes to the top of a cliff, you cannot climb it but it marks an old mine entrance. you can go there and it will continue this quest. Im only up to that 1st part. not sure if more is available, scouring the map to get everything i can out of Chapter 1.

Yeah it's where you fault the Dal Rita guy that went mad. If you go there and follow the trail to the left and up you can't miss it. Big wooden platform looking thing in what looks like a collapsed cave entrance in the wall. Walk up on it to start. Also it was the same place it showed on the gong quest to get more wrydstone. It marks two locations on the map. It's the far North one. Just west of North gate. So you will some point get shown where to go. I didn't go there first because I got enough stone for the gong in the shadow of the horns part. After completing the Gong part if you didn't go there it will remove the marker from the map. I wanted to see what was there and that's what I found. Yeah just go where you fault Sveinn the Del Riata brother. And follow the trail.

thats a different quest from the one OP's asking about. and its the same quest im stuck on. has anyone found the solution to this, or are we all fumbling around in the dark?

I have only ever had interaction when entering the Wyrd fog and when completing the main quest for this chapter. The quest mentioned by LilQuito is also about the Fore-Dwellers (presumably), but indeed unrelated (yet intruiging).

I am assuming that the quest can only be completed when the full game is released.

I’m up to this point of the quest too, done every other quest I can find in the first area but I can’t ever get into the big mine. There’s a little white marker (Npc type marker) but there’s nothing there. So I’m stuck too.

There used to be a scripted interaction with the spirit on approaching the mine entrance but that seems to have been removed or disable in one of the recent updates. As of now, I don't think it is possible to get in the great mine at all.
