Colonist Assignments

Is there any way of instructing a colonist to work in a specific building? The only way I've been able to do it is to change the colonist Assignments settings (Engineer, Research, etc.) and play around with the priority settings of the building to "attract" them to it. Feels like it's an overly complicated hit and miss way of doing it, there must be a better way?
