When it says research required. that means you must research what you just tried to build. The research tree shows what research is available. All research is done through the lab icon.
Do the tutorial. Pay attention to what it is teaching you. You just might learn somethings and answer your own questions.
Cheers
Selecting certain contracts gives you boosts and then you can buy research points (albeit it's quite the waste imo) on top of that.
For optimal research you want to hire research colonists and a lot of them as soon as possible and build labs to speed it up even more.
The entire mechanic with colonist is WIP and it shows since you can't lay-off people so they will be just there entirely worthless in late game, consuming resources.
Colonist engineers and botanists will significantly speed up resource crafting for higher tier materials also.
Arc: Thanks!
Tutorials are always easier than the game. Every game I have ever played, the tutorials were easier. If they were hard, lots of people wouldn't bother playing it.
Take rover or more than one rover and explore/scan moon. Rovers give some orange and blue research while they are moving. Supply material needs to POI's found with rover, they give research points. Late game as of now, I have over 17000 of each color and nothing to research just from completing the POI needs.
If you can afford it buying the research needs can help speed up the research. Think of it as a boost. And also if you don't have green is better to buy it than not get research done.
Build the colonist base even if you don't plan on getting colonist for awhile. Build the labs. they give some research point just for having them. Every little bit helps in the long run. You can also build a room 7x5(or what ever size you want), one single door and electrical panel. and drop small cpu's in. Fill it completely. You get 10 cpu for each one, I have never had a cpu break down. That will help with cpu needs. Don't need colonist to run cpu room.
In Sandbox, you are more on your own, even if you accept Crust help. You don't get all the broken buildings to scrap for materials. I have played it both ways. with all the help and with none. Just takes longer to get the truck and rover when played extreme hard. But is doable.
Hope this helps
Cheers
I fully understand that if you are in a position to pump hours into this game and learning it so you completely completely understand it, research is not a issue, but as a new player trying to learn the game it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
I really want to just throw my hands up and call it done ... its not worth the frustration of having to much time invested in a given mission to find out its broken. I haven't because I keep hoping this is going to be a good game. But right now I am completely BS on this!!!
Being honest it is NOT complex.
One of us is indeed being wildly immature.
Go actually watch the tutorial demo and the tooltips the game literally has built right in to explain the very straightforward system you "completely don't understand".
That said, this sort of game may simply not be something you like or ever will enjoy if the mystery of a tech tree escapes you.
This is not saying "git gud" but rather "git baseline literacy".
