Is this a Factoria style game?
For years, I've been waiting for something like Sierras old (very, very old) classic, Outpost.

That game was a half baked mess but it was interesting in it's ideas and never really led to anything else like it. There was a Mars based Paradox game that was similar a few years back but it just fell flat.

The only thing I have seen since then, is the explosion in Factorio like games, with automated production lines etc. Not really something that appeals to me, tbh.

So is this like Factorio? Or is it something else?

Outlook was one of my favorite games when it came out. I still have a version of it fixed to play on newer Windows systems. I have continuously looked for games that have that surface and underground type mechanic, but have never found anything that comes close.

Unfortunately, you will find that The Crust is more a Factorio type game, than it is an Outpost type game, although it does have both the surface and underground components, and a very interesting storyline.
Hmm, I thought so from looking at the screenshots. Oh well. I'm sure it's a decent title but probably not what I'm looking for.

Outpost, whilst being super buggy and never finished, was so engaging. Choosing the star you would take a chance on. Scanning various planets to find one that would be suitable to colonise. The huge tech tree and building options (for it's time atleast) were soooo good.

Shame it never really got a true sequel. Outpost 2 was an RTS if I recall.
Now I have to try that Outpost game. :)
Guess if Early Access had been a thing when Outpost came out it might have made it. Looks like would have been fun to play

It's very old, hard to get to run right and extremely buggy with loads of missing features as it was rushed out the door.

I make no promises for what anyone new to the game, with today's expectations and experience, might find. But in the 90's it had seemed really ground breaking.

I get where your coming from, but I have no idea how they would have made that work, with only physical copies of games being available and only the embryonic internet for feedback. Hell, patches if they even had them, came on floppy disks in monthly or quarterly PC magazines. lol

I have been gaming since the 1975. And I wrote the game, don't ask has been dust for 40 years. I understand your pain. We have come a long way.

Cheers

Don't ask, For a proper sequel you mean? :wftolaugh:

I wasn't going too, but I can understand the apprehension. It's all the rage these days to reboot things or continue them decades later.

There is no disputing that the industry has come a long way. It would be nice if we could see some games in the vein of Outpost and not just endless Factorio clones though. The fact this game departs from that style in places (from what I can tell) is a good sign perhaps.
Nah, was stick man jumps, stick man ducks, while running, or stick man shoots an arrow. Was easy to write the program. Hamrumba was all the rage back then also, I didn't write that one. Stick man was what they taught us in High school computer class. Or making a basic rocket take off on the screen. All basic language. What would become Linux in later years.

This game is refreshing

I've never played Outpost, but have heard the comparison to The Crust many times. Could you please share your patched version for Windows. I really want to try it, maybe there are some interesting concepts in there?
If you mean Mars Survival, yes, The Crust is possibly the most similar game to that. With some nice unique pros but also cons.

:wftolaugh: No, if I had meant Mars Survival, I'd have said Mars Survival.

I meant Outpost.
