Social Science in the early game

At the beginning of the game we are supposed to choose between helping HOPE 2 or the FASM contract. From the options of selecting the HOPE 2 contract you are supposed to receive 60 research points in each discipline for 180 days.

I've never been able to get 'social research' points until after I've contacted the HOPE 2.

Am I doing something wrong or is this the way it's supposed to play out?

You'll be able to get those points by completing contracts. Run through habitat constructing missions as fast you can (the last one will be - to build medical and science modules), then you'll get contracts with science reward, social science too.

You do get it, but not until after the repeater. That is what allows you to start researching the room building.
