Looking for advice on placing Mutli-Regulith Refinery
I want to set up a 3x MR Refinery. What are teh important things I should consider in terms of placement for resources?

Should one of them be on a regular resource spot or doesnt it matter?

Surface or Underground?

TIA for input

I keep my basic processing and basic refinement underground. That means, refineries/extractors/smelters and basic factories. Advanced factories and main storage should really be on the surface in my opinion, since it'll cut on drone travel time when fulfilling contracts and supplying expeditions.

In terms of the spot in general - it doesn't matter all that much. You can make it so all these 3 MR refinery block uses a single general input conveyer and 5 output conveyers (each oxide and slag), so it's rather compact. A piece of advice is just to have bulk storages somewhere on these input/output conveyers for their appropriate resource - if the refinery has too much resource in it then it'll stop working until that resource is taken out and these bulk storages allow them to store the resources somewhere besides their innate storage.

Have to disagree with putting advanced factories on the surface. Nearly all of them require people to function at a decent speed, and if they are on the surface it means your colonists have that much further to travel to get to them and thus less time to work when they actually get there.

I have a setup with six MRs underground and all the deposits under there (except water obviously) feed into it. It worked very well. However, once I added the regolith from the mobile drilling rig, the belts could not keep up. So I am toying with the idea of having one setup underground for those deposits and another smaller version up top for the MDR returns. I can always use an elevator to transport the oxides underground if I need.

advanced factories need people to get decent production speed, they belong right next to the room of you colonists and then connected to the surface via elevator.

I Started Belting all my extractors together and having the multi-Refinery process it all. i find it easier for setting up the more complex production chains, like components, while keeping my CPU usage low and the Factory Compact.

Hmm ..if thats works it sounds like a good idea. I'll give that a whirl se what happens.... but back to the placement in terms of resources there is no reeason to choose a specific place, like looking for ideal locations in terms of mineable resources.

Just wherever you have a lot of open space for belts and machines is best.

I basically set up an ore storage, belt items into there from extractors .. it all mixes up .. belt that into the multi-regolith refinery. It outputs all the stuff. I 'TRY' to get one of each of the 4 oxide inputs into the storage and then belt it out into 2 refineries. That gives me initially 120/min then after upgrades 180/min into the refineries. Which is one MK2 belt from the storage. You can also load regolith by hand into one of the storages and get rid of the presses for concrete.

I put the multi in the same place I would put a single. I conveyor the highest percentage to a process line, I might conveyor of the 2nd highest if it is large enough. I always have a few lines that start with a bulk storage, then periodically high priority the bulk storage. The drones go nuts filling it, then I put it back to normal priority. Works good

After a few attempts of failing i chose a layout that is endlessly expandable
Basically you create a grid so that every type of factory is expandable in a line without getting blocked by others. The Regolith refinieries go something like this:

and then you have some sort of resource highway that branches into the different factories to the left and right:

All storages are on the surface and excess resources go up via lift. Input belts for other factories for preprocessed resources are fed with belt crossings and favourite outputs.

It costs a bit more credits especially at start becouse you need a bit longer belt lines, but it pays off in mid and late game.
