Anyone explain why there is a belt input and output for slag?

there are input and output for slag on all of the refineries. It doesn't make any sense.

I think the main idea here is that you can connect the slag outputs/inputs to one another and avoid using any underground conveyors that way, let's you build them closer alongside eachother as well without blocking those outputs.

They are used for pass through. You can put them side by side and connect with a short belt and only have to output from the last one. Would have been nicer if you did not have to use a 1 belt between them though.

Jorn Stones is right. You just have to be carefull because if you turn one raffinery, the slag will be blocked.
