At 35 hours, you're still in the process of getting acquainted with the basics. If you're doing delicate maneuvers (driving by a cliffside is definitely a delicate one), you really shouldn't be using Automatic at all.
Another reason not to use Automatic, is that it's very bad for fuel efficiency. You don't really want to use Automatic unless you're doing multi-point turns in safe places where you're not in danger of wrecking, or unless you are using any gearbox that isn't a highway gearbox and you want to go faster at the expense of burning more fuel than normal.
I do touchpad (I don't use mice) and keyboard as well, and this isn't an issue with how the game was set up. It's an issue with your driving habits.
