Things can be locked, but those are warehouse and industry locations or a tunnel entrance. you need to to mission ( contracts ) for to get access.

Important is there are main missions ( always there ) and side missions ( only found on location in the map ) So for the latter you need to scout and/or unlock watchtowers to find them.

In some DLC these side missions are not optional, as they unlock warehouses with essential materials or access via a blocked tunnel. In some DLC these side missions merely provide materials closer and more convenient then dragging materials through multiple maps.

It is often a hodgepodge of what is needed, so it is advisable to read through all the main mission requirements first, and if these do not unlock things you need, or you are obviously missing required materials, assume that the side missions are mandatory to do.

And while we are at it : later in DLC maps you will run into industry locations that need a generator to power them. These come in 2 flavors : materials that are produced from fuel only ( the game assumes the factory had it's own raw materials but no power ) or you need to deliver the raw materials ( logs, rolls or beams of steel ) AND fuel to get the end product you need. But this is not yet in the base game.

And while Michigan and Alaska are very reasonable environments ( the main challenge is to get through the slick tire, no AWD or diff lock and small wheel stages ) where you can often just follow the road ( only need go around some trouble spots ) the real difficult "snow" maps require you NOT use the roads, as these are artificially "trapped" or far more frustrating to use then finding you own routes. These maps are not difficult when you know what surface to drive on ( not roads obviously ) but relative few players learned that before quitting out of frustration. So the later ( more recent ) DLC are more like Michigan and Alaska again.

Well I only started playing it again a week ago, when I logged back on after the few months (Last I played was December, also then I only had under 3 hours of play time) I was in Alaska so I thought to myself "maybe I came here for a reason", so I started driving around looking for stuff to do, realised I had no where near good enough stuff and f**ked off back to Michigan.

The tutorial ends in Alaska, so you must not have gotten very far last time. You probably logged off before going back to MI at the end of the tutorial.

yea that bit was only to show ya how fast travel worked between regions nothing more, you probably could start with alaska if you bought some good dlc truck packs to get an easier jump on completing tasks, avoid the mastodon though you will get bored fast with that one as it makes everything too easy
