Any real penalty on just recover to garage when you feel like it?
Playing on normal difficulty...and any time I want to get back to base and don't have any cargo or anything...you can just warp back to garage with recover? No penalties?

no penalty on normal only hard mode will charge for it

when you get more vehicles unlocked btw dont just fast travel back to the garage everytime though, take a different vehicle out cause ya never know ya might need a rescue vehicle nearby

It can be personally rewarding and satisfying to never resort to using the recover option. In my 2000+ hours of play time I have probably only used it about 5 times total. In my current new game+ I have 80% completed all content and only been forced to use the recover twice. If you have the time and discipline it is a great way to play the game in my opinion.

Currently, as a new player, my biggest problem is any sort of major mud spots/water spots.

The tricks I have right now get stuck so damn easy and I can't really buy any mud tires for the larger trucks that are needed to transport things. I do make use of the winch frequently but even then it can be painfully slow going or I simply get stuck with nothing nearby to winch to.

I've finally found both a raised suspension and AWD upgrade for this Fleetstar...hopefully I can finally start to make some good progress.

Don't forget the shortest route is usually not the fastest "or the best". Plan routes, make mental notes of places you can cut around trees to avoid swamps etc. There's also nothing wrong with bouncing around maps and working on unlocking upgrades just by scouting, then coming back when your better equipped.

Most mud spots are avoidable. If winching is something you need to do commonly than you are choosing poor routes. You should never have to rely on winching all the time.

BTW the AWD upgrade for the Fleetstar was directly in front of the truck when you found the truck. So unless you went out of your way to avoid the upgrade when you found the truck you would have gotten both of them at the same time.

No there is no penalty for recovery in normal mode. But when you tow semi-trailers or trailers you will have to leave them or drive back with them anyway.

Leaving trailers where they are has it's uses though. Same as not recovering trucks but leaving them where they are. There is always some mission near that requires their use, and you don't have to drive all the way from the garage to there.

So rather then fussing about "too easy" teleports to garage you could consider leaving the truck where it is and using another from the garage. Even in the base game you will acquire several trucks so this is quite doable.

The thing is in normal mode trucks are fueled and repaired whenever you turn them in the garage. This is not the case in hard mode so less incentive to to back there. To not have to return to the garage in hard mode or similar set mode+ you will have to use fueling and repair trucks or trailers. In normal mode you will have to do that too in remote maps without a garage.

Luckily there are often fuel and repair trailers lingering about so you don't have to drive back or buy them. I personally send a fuel truck and a repair truck anyway as my trucks always need fuel or repair where the fuel or repair trailer is not at.

A funny thing, I didn't know that there were multiple bays inside a garage. So I thought the trucks I recovered out in the wild simply disappeared when you left the garage and finding them only meant you unlocked them for purchase.

Then I found them all sitting in the other garage bays when I finally pressed the right button to scroll over lol

In theory it is harmless. however, you will pay in time from recovering over and over, when you may need to just send out a second vehicle to pull yourself out.

Also, you can winch the second truck, so the first truck may slow down and get stuck, but if you activate the towed truck, it will help push you to safety.

I have chosen a recovery cost of 15.000 credits. I edited the savefile to give me this price because I kept using the recovery and it became a bit too convenient for me. I have since used it only once.

I think the recovery cost varies according to the vehicle. In my New Game+ I have had to recover twice, once was the Fleetstar which cost me like $25,000 as I recall. The other was the Derry Special which cost me $48,000.

Ah, yes, your're right. The cost differs depending on the vehicle. I didn't know that.

This exact thing happened to me too. The garage bays are not so intuitive. A few times I thought I lost a purchased vehicle switching from Alaska to Michigan for instance.
