On normal mode all DLC car's will be added to your hangar instantly.
On Hard Mode you need to buy it first.
On New Game+ mode you can set different conditions (allow DLC car's / ban or increase prises x6...)
Learn why and when you need gear mode up and gear mode down. How to use revers with differential "On". How stable or unstable car become on huge tires. How and when use your winch...
And as soon as you are ready you can create new game even on Hard mode. As for me Normal mode is too easy and boring.
The learning curve is steep and the game doesn't do much teaching, but

Check out this thread, from someone else having trouble in michigan. They were a bit further along but a lot of the advice applies even just starting (like, say, beware of roads that can be harder than going off road).
Of course, buying some DLC vehicles can make everything a lot easier. But you also don't need to if you don't want to. Generally, late-game vehicles earned through playing are more powerful, and there's very strong vehicles available well before that too - Though with stuff like the mastodon it's maybe so close to not be worth the distinction.
If you do want to buy DLC vehicles, well, of course the Mastodon will trivialize just about everything early on, and even something like the tatra dual pack is still very good starting out.
