and for whatever reason 4wd is called awd, this is incorrect.
Hold L1 and while holding use Right Stick to change gear selection.
Is it L1 + D-Pad? At least it i have it
Depends on whether or not you changed the standard default settings for your controller.
With the Controller's Default Settings, to manually change gears, it is:
Hold L1 and at same time use the Right Toggle to manually select gears.
Not sure how you have your controller set up. If you made changes to the Controller Settings, then I have no clue what you have to do to change gears.
Not sure about controller, but an undocumented feature is when your truck is labouring (too high gear for speed) slam SHIFT button to downshift quickly to the right gear without waiting on the auto gearbox and consequent loss of power. Same for an early upshift if picking up speed downhill.
You can't use this manually select gears, sadly. That would've been sweet.
Another tip (PC): bind your gear controls onto the numpad. This allows you to instantly select any gear position instantly. e.g. '5' auto, '2' reverse, '4' LO, '8' HI, etc. Now you need never use mouse-gear again. As an added bonus if you are shuttling between LO forward and back, you won't lose diff lock. For OP, I don't think you will have enough buttons on a gamepad to do this, but maybe you could do a hybrid solution?
Edit: Corrected 'manual' gear change. It's just tap shift (by default) to select the 'right' gear in auto. Added gamepad detail. Also add visual guide to config:

Thanks for the award, kind trucker!
'AWD' is same-same-but different in that all wheels can be powered, but the amount per wheel/axle can change, usually (now) under computer control. This is what average AWD cars have, mostly for traction control. Their differentials are limited-slip, not fully lockable.
Under normal driving conditions you probably wouldn't even notice the difference, it only comes into play off-road. This is where you see people taking their SUV into a paddock and getting stuck very quickly with one wheel off the ground spinning and all others just sitting there doing nothing. Hence 'AWD' is not the same as '4WD'.
If it counts I'm pretty sure Saber just adopted AWD as the term most people use and also means a simpler game interface - they only need to program one indicator instead of several depending on how many axles the vehicle has and if they're powered.
