Controls recommendations
This isn't about how controls work, or what controls work. I'm looking for suggestions on which way to play.

I own a Logitech G29 wheel and shifter. In most driving games this is a no-brainer to use. However with SnowRunner, while the wheel is more immersive, it makes almost all other controls more of a headache, specifically looking around. In other games this is solved either by VR support or TrackIR support... of which SnowRunner has neither.

But playing without the wheel just feels like a handicap on immersion (and I hate keyboard for turning). And using a game controller violates the PC master race creed...

So for now... I'm simply not playing. I'd love to play, but I'm at a mental stalemate on what controls to use to make it enjoyable.

Thoughts?

I use an Xbox controller. This game isn't really setup for being played with a wheel, which is probably why the support isn't a priority for them. The roads are trash, your constantly backing up, you have to winch yourself every 3 mins, you have to control a crane to load/unload cargo. It's not the type of game play that works well with a wheel. It was designed to be played with a controller, but can also be played with the keyboard (yuck) if you want to.

It's not a true sim, no person in real life would ever be driving trucks like these up mountains and on "roads" like this. It just wouldn't happen. It's more of a strategy game than anything else. I've lost no immersion playing with a controller and I have about 500 hours into the game so far.

Thanks for the input (no pun intended). I've seen videos of streamers playing this game with a wheel, but they always have to have the mouse handy along with a button box.

As much as I -hate- controllers, I might try one. No guarantees I'd play that way though... but it would probably be wrong not to explore the options.

I use the steering wheel, controller and mouse. That works very well.
In the cockpit view I use the steering wheel when I don't need a winch. As soon as I need the winch, want to look around, need to load or attach something, I switch to the outside view and use the controller. I use the mouse when there are many winch points or I want to attach a specific load with the crane.
Next to my steering wheel chair I have a side table on which I put the mouse and the controller on my lap.
In the cockpit view, I also like to look around with the mouse (left-click once).
When I get a chance I'll make a video to show how well it works.

That sounds ... involved. :) That does beg another question though... I do prefer to play driving games from cockpit view for more realism, however, this game seems to demand much more 3rd person views to see what the heck is going on around you.

That said, it's not a great candidate for VR since 3rd person in VR is just weird, likewise it's probably not a good candidate for TrackIR for the same reason. It's such a strange hybrid game like was said above, between strategy and driving.

But all 3 controls... just curious why the controller is in there, if you already have access to the mouse...

With the controller I can look around while driving. The crane can also be controlled very well with the controller.
I prefer to use the cockpit view and the steering wheel. There's plenty of long distance driving without the need for the winch and the steering wheel is very useful. It's not uncommon for me to be able to drive 15 minutes without using the winch. I find that very comfortable with the steering wheel.

Over 2000 hours in the game, (Epic/Steam/PS4) and found a Controller (PS4 or Xbox, both work great) combined with a mouse works best. As already stated, with a controller you can drive and look around easily. Everything can be done with the Controller and the mouse is not needed; nevertheless, the Mouse works great for connecting the Winch or Crane. Not necessary, but comes in handy when there are multiple winch points or crane attachment points and when the crane points are far away.

Download a bit of software called AntiMicro then your gear shift wheel and pedals work. You just need to bind them through the letters you have already assigned in the game.
Amazing that these devs release a driving game with out even the basic ability to use the wheel or hardware properly.
