It's not a true sim, no person in real life would ever be driving trucks like these up mountains and on "roads" like this. It just wouldn't happen. It's more of a strategy game than anything else. I've lost no immersion playing with a controller and I have about 500 hours into the game so far.
Thanks for the input (no pun intended). I've seen videos of streamers playing this game with a wheel, but they always have to have the mouse handy along with a button box.
As much as I -hate- controllers, I might try one. No guarantees I'd play that way though... but it would probably be wrong not to explore the options.
In the cockpit view I use the steering wheel when I don't need a winch. As soon as I need the winch, want to look around, need to load or attach something, I switch to the outside view and use the controller. I use the mouse when there are many winch points or I want to attach a specific load with the crane.
Next to my steering wheel chair I have a side table on which I put the mouse and the controller on my lap.
In the cockpit view, I also like to look around with the mouse (left-click once).
When I get a chance I'll make a video to show how well it works.
That sounds ... involved. :) That does beg another question though... I do prefer to play driving games from cockpit view for more realism, however, this game seems to demand much more 3rd person views to see what the heck is going on around you.
That said, it's not a great candidate for VR since 3rd person in VR is just weird, likewise it's probably not a good candidate for TrackIR for the same reason. It's such a strange hybrid game like was said above, between strategy and driving.
But all 3 controls... just curious why the controller is in there, if you already have access to the mouse...
I prefer to use the cockpit view and the steering wheel. There's plenty of long distance driving without the need for the winch and the steering wheel is very useful. It's not uncommon for me to be able to drive 15 minutes without using the winch. I find that very comfortable with the steering wheel.
some wheels ive heard are incompatable with snowrunner
Amazing that these devs release a driving game with out even the basic ability to use the wheel or hardware properly.
