Editing Save File
I read that I can give myself money by editing the game file, but when I try to do it, the file just becomes corrupted and doesn't show in the game list anymore.

I simply changed the amount of money I had. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Try this online editor.

Make sure you always have a backup!

Interesting website. Thanks.

Are you editing the CompleteSave.dat file with Notepad and changing the "Money" value to whatever you want. the money value you want to edit is here in the dat file: "persistentProfileData":{"money":10000000,"refundMoney". Do not alter any other money value.

No I don't have any *.dat files all my files are *.cfg. There are lines with money but none that state what you said.

Sounds like you are editing the wrong files...

The save files should be in the directory:

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\SnowRunner\base\storage\SomeCrypticIDNumber\

There you find 1-4 files named CompleteSave*.dat depending on how many saved game slots you have used:

CompleteSave.dat (=save game slot #1)
CompleteSave1.dat (=save game slot #2)
CompleteSave2.dat (=save game slot #3)
CompleteSave3.dat (=save game slot #4)

These are just normal textual json files and can be edited with any *text* editor (so do NOT use word or wordpad or other fancy things...). If you have nothing else then notepad will do but I recommend getting Notepad++ and its json viewer plugin. The reason is that the json data in the .dat file is all in one single line so it's not very human friendly. That Notepad++ json viewer will show you a nice tree view of it, so you can find stuff from it easier and actually examine it to see what kind of other stuff the save file contains.

But of course, you can just seach for the string "money" and mind you, find the place where the "money" is written in *small* letters. That's your current game account balance. There are some other fields that contain the word "MONEY" but they mean different things.

And make a back up before you edit. If you manage to mess up the save file that will not harm the game itself. You can always simply start a new game and save it over the slot you messed up. This will, of course, make you lose the original saved game, which is why you should have backed it up in the first place before editing it. :steamhappy:

There is nothing in my Documents directory for this game. It's empty. The only files I have are in my Stream directory that are CompleteSave.cfg. There are 4 of them. I have no *.dat files at all for this game.

These are the only files I have: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AmL8aIYnOOzpsoVNXvpVObSVzBlU5g?e=pghW8d

No. I can see you don't own the game on Steam. So my guess is you own it on Epic. On epic it's exactly how you explained it. On Steam, though, it's cfg files, not dat files, and these are also stored somewhere completely different.

For the Steam version the path is located at: [...]\Steam\userdata\some ID\1465360.

OP is correct with his path. I can't tell you what's wrong, though. If you edit the file correctly, it should work.

Are you using notepad+? I fear a regular editor can mess up formatting in the file.

Oh, didn't know that. Thank you for explanation. Yes, I bought the game in Epic at the time when that was the only place you could buy it. I didn't know (or even think) that it might have a different save game system in Steam.

Sorry for confusion.
