Play hard mode and they're not free if that bugs you. (nothing is free in hard mode)
I kind of expect that if I buy a DLC truck, I'll be able to use it, even if I can't afford to buy it (again) in game. Most games I've played work that way.
Edit: Besides that, I've seen a lot of threads with people complaining they still have to go find the DLC truck and don't automatically receive it. I can only imagine the rage if they had to pay for them all as well.
Also, there is always the option of not using the truck until you've gotten further in the game. Get to hard mode and I'm sure you'll love paying nearly $200,000 for the International.
Hard mode has some other difficulty modifiers, too, you should be aware of but at least I think it's *much* better than the "normal mode" especially if you have lots of DLCs which then give you an abundance of vehicles removing any struggle to progress from the game...
Hard mode:
- Gas costs money (so definitely use all that fuel lying around in trailers especially in Michigan...)
- Recovery costs money (ouch...)
- Repairing in the garage costs money (still can repair with the service trailer and service frame for "free" with repair points)
- Moving between garages and regions costs money
- No extra DLC vehicles for free. You start with the chevy and that's it.
- Selling vehicles gives you 50% of the price
- No selling of trailers is allowed
That last one I don't like. You should be able to sell trailers, even if it was for 50% price...
I'd prefer if you could toggle all these difficulty options individually on or off instead of just having the two choices "normal" and "hard".
Well, if there is one difficulty setting you don't like but do prefer to keep all the others, there's, of course, always the "creative fudging" option to counter it, so been playing hard mode but with the "house rule" that selling trailers is allowed. At least in PC where you can edit the save file you can do this. A bit of a hassle and extra work but you can do it. Not sure about how it's in game consoles.
In all honesty I do like that the DLC vehicles are upgradable and can be tuned due to parts sharing. I can't say much as I've hardly touched anything outside of the starter CK1500 and Bandit.
the reason hard mode blocks that is cause its a exploit to get free fuel, you can sell a empty fuel trailer and buy a new full one for the same price
For example, to "allow selling of trailers at 50% price" you would use the "delete trailer" option available at the trailer shop when in the game, and then after the play session credit yourself half of it's value by modifying the money amount in the save file.
That's not the reason. They could have easily made the sell price 50% just like they did for trucks, besides that, a fuel tanker is empty when you buy it in hard mode, so there would be no point in buying one, filling it with gas, and then selling it. You'd still have to pay for the gas. There are plenty of free fuel trailers laying around the map. If they didn't want you getting free fuel they would have prevented you from using those to fill up, or removed them completely in hard mode.
It's also not an exploit if its available within the game's mechanics. There's nothing to exploit, that's just the way it works. I'm also not sure how worried the developers would be about exploits in a primarily single player game. I mean, the save files are stored in plain text, you can easily open it and edit it to give yourself a billion dollars by changing one line. They also allow mods which can make all these changes. They're not worried about something like that in this type of game.
On hard mode? Don't buy gas in hard mode, take free gas from the random fuel tankers sitting around. Unless you really *want* to pay for it. There are so many other things to pay for, I allow myself free fuel.
Use another truck to bring them fuel, or pay to recover to the garage. You start with 3 trucks between the GMC, Chevy, and Fleetstar. Don't get them all screwed over at the same time.
But, welcome to hard mode. You have to really plan things out, which makes it "hard". Every choice you make is going to cost you money.
I just started a hard mode game and it's awesome. It makes it feel like I actually own my trucks and trailers, and I am always careful not to damage my trucks or trailers (you can bend/twist trailers badly if you roll them, then they don't drive flat anymore).
I also repaired and kept the second Chevy I found in Smithville. Normally, I sell it, but 50% isn't worth selling it. I am going to put to use any free vehicle I find. It never hurts having a second copy of the Chevy sitting there in case I get myself in a jam. If anything, I can use it to pull another scout out of a bad situation. That's one nice thing about hard mode. Even the junk becomes useful.
Since the GMC is somewhat useless, you can take the blue truck bed off of it, and use it on the Fleetstar instead. Saves a lot of money at the start. Then I just put a low saddle on the GMC to help move other trailers around the garage and other paved areas when needed.
Install the autonomous winch on the Chevy and you'll be able to use it without the engine running. Its expensive but if you had that, you'd likely be able to winch yourself the remaining 50 meters to the gas station.
