Bad engine sounds?
Hello,

Anyone noticed that engine sounds are really poor recreated?

It's like it does not correspond the sound with the throttle I am aplying. It's like there is a loop sound repeating over and over again but in some vehicles (Scout 400 and Khan 39) it's annoying to the point it's ruining my experience and immersion.

Is there any way to improve this? A mod or something? I can't remember this issue in last two games.

All the sounds are effectively short .WAV audio clips that play depending on context. You can find them in the shared_sound.pak in the main game files. They're labelled as .PCM files but Media Player will open them despite whining it doesn't recognise the file type.

Some of the way these sound files play is rather poorly implemented and can get grating after a while. Like this particular scenario:

Cruising along at speed, you briefly let off the throttle and reapply it a second later.
Now a real vehicle likely won't even notice this. Inertia of engine, inertia of vehicle and driveline back-driving the engine, maybe might see a few rpm drop at most but then the power comes back and it carries on as normal. You'll hardly detect a change in engine note.

In the game? It sees the reapplication of throttle and goes Play "royal_bm17_acc_1.pcm" and you get that sod awful 'BRUM'. It sounds like you were holding the clutch and blipping the throttle.

Then you get oddities like the moment the truck changes up gear if you let go of the throttle the <truckname>_rev_1.pcm sound continues to play. Sure the game tries to fade it out sooner than usual, but not really quick enough and it becomes so obvious a set length audio clip is playing rather than anything dynamic.

There's only four engine notes for normal operation - idle, low, high and heavy. The way these are mixed, usually fading one out and the other in, leaves a lot to be desired at times.

Unfortunately there is no way to improve this. There is no real gearbox and no torque curves afaik, so simulating sound based on these is not possible. So we are stuck with a start engine and stop engine sound, a rev sound, the not very good sound loop and a load sound. It all mixes together. That's truly not the best option.
For us Epic users, it's been an issue for over a year. The worst offender is the CK1500 with its bad engine loop. That sound doesn't loop well at all. The others are OK, but yes, all of them are quite detached from RPM. Another buggy thing with the engine sounds is that they will fade out when you spin in mud or snow with partial throttle.
Is this possible to mod / are there any mods that exchange the engine sound loop with a more seamless one?
For a game with such an amazing vehicle / environment simulation it is rather baffling that this wasn't implemented better.
There’s an engine sound mod on io. I personally thought they would have reworked it - as you said - it’s the biggest immersive letdown in the game. Consider the ‘chunky’ engine sounds on both ST and MR.
I turn engine sounds right the way down and have truck rattles/crunches etc way up higher.
The looping done my head in with one of the DLC scouts...

Using this mod blindely is a bad idea. It's over a year old and has never been patched to make it compatible with newer game versionis. So much changed in that edited file. If using this either the game crashes or you don't have the added features like all that stickers and stuff.

Well how come i have "all the stickers and stuff?" I have the full season pass and havent had a crash etc in over a year of having the game. I install btw through .io because it's simple to activate/deactivate via the slider. The only issues i've had is funky trucks and loads on them!
The mod you linked is not even working with subscription based installation, nor does activate/deactivate do anything. That explains why your game still works.

Just as little explanation:

This mod would only works if you replace an original game file with it. mod.io can't replace base game files, at all. It never did in SnowRunner and it never will. So you played without any effect.

The mod itself: Well all it would do is changing volumes. It doesn't change or add or improve any sound, at all.

You can replace sounds with the sounds of other vehicles in the game very easily. I did this twice so far, in case of the Voron D-53233 I changed the excuciatingly horrible sound of the brake release to that of the Voron AE and in case of the ANK MK38 I changed the full revved engine sound (which sounds like a lawnmower) to that of P512, which sounds alot closer to what it should.

You need to change the trucks .xml in the initial pak in the installation folder under "yourdata"\Steam\steamapps\common\Codename - SR\preload\paks\client

MR engine sounds were done better. The engine sound frequency at least sounded like it increased with RPM. In SR the sounds just get louder, which also makes them fade out at low throttle. ST took it even a step farther and simulated engine revving while going downhill, and added stereo sounds. SR has by far the worst sounds out of the 3 games.

I automatically assumed it was working? It has a something like 90+% or near enough voted.. Ah well
It definitely did not work. On mod.io and for Snowrunner we have to differ between mods we can install via subscription and mods we can only install manually. Everything that edits base game files can only be installed manually. This mod is one of the mods that edits those files. I'd love to see more modders take care of a proper description, though.
Just here to +1 the weird overlapping looping engine sounds. Weird indeed.
the best engine sounds around game in my opinion is the white western star in michigan and ank mk38 from alaska
I mostly play with the sound off. In settings I have the engine sounds quite low because they don't sound real. I'm happy to play like that.
Mudrunner did this WAY better.
