With that said, the chances of a legendary seems to be a lot higher if you play with others.
First, all of the legendary I have found from barrels appears in a game where I was at least with 2 other players. Some times, I have found as much as 3 legendary in such barrel over the course of 5 to 8 floors.
Also, both the final chest of a floor and the chests from gold portals drop as many items as the number of player in the game. (Well, the final chest has 1-4 gems spawned and the gold portal has 1-4 chest with 1 gem each.) This means that a 4-player game have 4x more chance for a legendary than a 1-player game since you automatically has 4x more chance for a legendary. (In my first 4 player game, we found 2 legendary on the last chest of the FIRST floor.)
I noticed that even just having 2 players in a game seems to raise the quality of the reward-based gems. In solo, I usually find gold gems with barely any purple gems and with another player, I get around 3-5 purple gem per floor and, sometimes, 1 legendary. There might be a small difficulty adjustment + drop raise with more player in place. (This is an assumption that could only be confirmed by the dev.)
