how do i get sticks?

i need to light the campfire and i cannot find sticks anywhere, i can't make the axe w/o sticks....

Sticks don't seem to be very common in the desert setting but a few can be found in areas surrounding some important places. It takes some searching which you need to balance with food, water, sleeping and getting out of the sun so you don't get heat/sunstroke since they seem to be much more in need. Sleeping cots are another thing you need to watch out for as they are rare too.

Sticks can be usually found near trees! With the latest patch we also included a recipe to be able to dismantle planks in sticks, in case you have trouble finding more.

We will still look into resource balance so feel free to give us more feedback!

dismantling planks is a huge help, i die of hunger caz i can't start the fire. and i ventured out in all directions for sticks and like 3 fruit...then die again lol. thanks so much!

You are welcome, thanks for the feedback! We will add some extra sticks near the tree landmarks. :)

For the fire you can also use grass, wood from chairs/wheels/stools, coal and oil. We will add also peat from Dirt Piles.

i couldn't build an axe though to dismantle the chairs and stools around (w/o sticks)
unless i missed one i should've picked up around the plane.

You can find three sticks in the first cave, near the two mummified bodies, and near trees. You'll also occasionally find them lying around at random, so I suggest keeping an eye on the ground while you're exploring.

I recommend that you mostly them for crafting and repairing structures like traps, because they're not a super-common resource.

there is a real problem with the improvised axe requiring sticks...
the only way to craft sticks is by using an axe!
I cannot find any sticks for an axe, but I am awash with planks

For whatever it's worth, I found that after the third or fourth day, the game world was awash with sticks. I was finding them by the dozens, completely out of the blue, in places that had no sticks the day before.

EDIT:
Also, I definitely agree that making a recipe for getting sticks that requires a tool which itself can only be made with sticks is a level of recursion that seems aimed at frustrating players. If you can't find sticks, the recipe doesn't help you any; if you can, then you don't need it.

This would be a design fault (circular crafting), unless there's another type of axe that can also be used to craft Wood Sticks (and doesn't have sky high requirements).

So check if you can maybe make the bone axe if you loot a mummy?

We apologize for the inconvenience! There is a mistake in the recipe itself: it was supposed to require a knife (which is definitely easier to craft) to make more sticks, not an axe. We will fix the issue with the next patch!

In the meantime please hold on on those sticks or, as Gun Tech suggested, look for the bones!

Like everyone else, I am having stick problems. I have planks but have no idea on how to dismantle them...what am I missing? I feel like the solution it is right in front but cannot reach. Thanks in advance.

At the crafting bench you can make sticks/planks! We plan to fix the issues with the recipes with the upcoming patch, stay tuned!

if you have planks, make sure you have them in your inventory, open crafting bench, you should see a recipe to "dismantle plank". don't remember the ratio (2-1) but i just had to do it with my newest world not spawning sticks yet. hope that helps.
