Last thing to ask is what will you do? If you're looking for multiplayer then the only answer is generations. It's the only game that's alive and we really don't know for how much longer.
Lastly, I run a rally club for all rally games. If you're interested the links are in my profile! Hope you pick one and enjoy
They are massively discounted at this time.
Dirt Rally 2 engine sound and the gravel sound is better, really immersive. Tarmac is bad and the cars don't demand very much weigth handling from you.
WRC 10 is similar in that cars are ligth without inertia or momentum so you don't requiere weigth handling the car and is easier (unrealistic) to do well on tracks.
WRC Generations (WRCG) can have hardware bugs but for controller you can fix it in the generic options and also there is a thottle fix mod, so no problems for controller users. Anybody that played more hardcore sims like Assetto Corsa, RF2, AMS2 knows the physics on these games that requiere weigth handling so you don't spin the car and entry corners with correct speed and momentum. These more complex physics are in WRC Generations, period. You can have bugs with your wheel or some handware but for controller it is a dream the controlled inputs that you can do in WRCG (better with controller than DR2 and WRC10) and the physics are more complex. For more easier physics to enjoy more speed and drift Dirt Rally 2 or WRC10. For more simlike WRCG.
The bug not fixed is very ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but you can not negate the good parts of WRCG.
My impression is that WRC9 is better than 10 and 8, WRC4 is also a nice entry to the rally world.
But to be honest I would recommend you to start with DiRT4.
I'd have to say WRC 4 FIA if you are starting out. Very forgiving and you can easily win if you set everything to easy with only visual damage. It's a great way to learn, and you can then gradually start raising the difficulty for yourself as you get comfortable. Next is WRC 5 which is far closer to a true representation of what comes after. Despite some atrocious driving, you can still win so it's a great next next step.
For me, personally, moving forward from there, you great Career construction right up to 8 and then after it's really just fine tuning for the 9 and what I've seen of 10, and a loss of some features after.
Anyway, just my opinion, and I'm here contemplating 10 as there's a great ssale on, but I am hampered by using a controller. For real masochism, try V-Rally 4. Nver laughed so hard with my Porche somersaulting off a mountainside through the tree tops. Got an achievement from it to boot
You need to invest in RBR in order to make it shine (wheel/pedals/stick/handbrake/VR). I love it, but OP might just like to flip right/left on a controller and RBR is not made for it (may work ok though). RBR is not on Steam but free to download via rallysimfans webpage.
Anyhow, DR2 is better than EA WRC in my opinion. The KT series are ok but have no VR support.
