Anyone running the turbo engine?
I’ve been driving along in the zone with the ole gas-guzzler under the bonnet* and am considering a run specifically to grab any bits I need to build the turbo engine. But is it worth it? Should I treat my Melic to a new turbocharged engine?

Yes I know I can just go and find out but I was curious as to what other people have done.

*hood - but I’m British so your engine goes under the bonnet and your stuff goes in the boot ;-)

Given that it's computer assisted, you'd think the LIM Chipped would be more efficient.

Technically, I... think it is? Mind you, me and math don't talk much to each other anymore but:

Turbolight has 12 MPG @ 196 bhp, LIM-chipped has 9 MPG @ 304 bhp

Converting it into gallons per mile, we get 1/9 = 0.11 for LC, 0.083 for Turbolight.

0.11/304 = 0.00036. That's the LC's gallons per mile per horsepower.
0.083/196 = 0.00042. That's the Turbolight's gallons per mile per horsepower.

Therefore, the LIM Chipped engine does spend less fuel than the Turbolight to produce the same amount of power, however, it does produce almost double the bhp, meaning that if both engines are running full tilt, the LC will consume more. In theory, in Magic Engine World Land, if we capped the LC to the same bhp as the Turbolight, we'd get 14.17 MPG. It doesn't really work like that since both metrics are a product of the engine's function, but the point still stands that the LC is more efficient, according to my numbers.

(for those curious, the ratio is 0.00043 for the carbureted assuming the stats here)

TLDR: The LIM-chipped engine is more efficient if producing the same amount of power as the Carbureted and Turbolight engines, but it produces way more power, so it ends up consuming more.

Okay, I can understand that. Shows you are much better than me at math.
My main issue with using the second engine is I have to scrap and rebuild it very often(basically 2/3 runs), when I didn't even have to pay much attention to the original engine. Turbolight will run into issues after like 60 miles, and the original car engine has like 10k on it (I have it sitting in a cabinet).
Thanks everyone!
I've almost completed the game and also gone out on some specific runs to get the stuff required - particularly the thermolite crystals - but never quite got there so whether it's this playthrough or maybe a future replay I try to get enough stuff to build the Turbolight we'll see.

Over the weekend I took a slightly different turn and started scrapping lots of lead, those sodium lights, grabbing chemicals and other "rarer" stuff to beef up my car and have been coming back from runs in (mostly) better shape. Before that I took the view as long as I got back it was fine. Now I'm running with the standard engine, lead panelling at the front, lead doors at the front, and shielded (or whatever they're called) doors & panels on the back of the car.

I find I can avoid most stuff but often I just hit the power and blast straight through radiation.

Extra battery on one back seat, XL fuel tank on the other. On one side I have the wind turbine & storage. On the other I have the hydro generator & fuel synth. On the roof 2x storage, on the front the LIM emitter. I might not run out of fuel or power anytime soon but the car probably weighs ten tons, I'm surprised it can drive uphill haha.

Yeah the original engine does seem pretty bulletproof. Even with panels missing and the storm closing in while driving through stuff you really should drive around I've only had to repair it (using putty) once during my entire time with the game and even then it was something like 75% good.

I was thinking what is the replay value for me and its going to be customisation, trying different engines, finding different ways of doing things. What will probably happen is I'll play other things then one day think "I need to go for a drive"
Tried the base engine, Turbolite (no stututu), and AMP.

Base engine is the most reliable, Turbo is the best between the other two "high end" upgrades that is actually manageable. AMP is by far the worst I have seen because it consumes too much power, even when I had 2 batteries for the back and a hydro+turbine side mounts. Oddly enough, the AMP was the most reliable engine when conditions were hazardous. Problem is when you're on low battery, you need to find a place to stop and let the battery charge itself when its windy or raining.

Turbolite is best tbh

I think the problem is that you are using a mixture of generation methods. If you use 2+ turbines you can keep the battery charge up while moving at a steady pace. With enough you can also use the lights and radiation shield and potentially having the LIM shield activate.
Having more powerful engines net you two distinct advantages. First off it increases your natural top speed and acceleration.
Secondly it reduces your reliance on correct tires, with the base engine you may struggle off road with summer tires, or your acceleration stinks on road with off-road sets. But if you have a better engine you can make up for the lack of traction with raw power.
