How do I take half the number of given item?

I might be just having an episode of extreme boomer-ness, but how tf do I take out only half of a given item from my inventory?? For example:
I have 20 flares on the locker, but I wanna take 3 with me. If I press Shift+RMB it takes one from the pile to my hand. If I try to take only 1 again, doesn't let me.... So Im either stuck with 1 flare or 20.

Is there a system like minecraft where you can split the pile in half and keep splitting until you get the number you want?

The best you can do is select it, maybe you have to place it in your hand, and click X to drop one item at a time out of the stack. Put the rest of the stack away, and pickup what you just dropped.
