laboratory reports

what am I supposed to do with these red lab reports that I picked up.
description says "store in station" or smth like that.
they are saved in my logbook but stay as items in my inventory.

can I drop them or do I need them for anything later on?

You need the fax machine to store them in a similar fashion to your paints and decals

are they crucial for the game progress and give anything back for storing them in the fax machine? I mean it's just a report.

I've not yet seen any reason to collect them beyond "lore". The fax machine seems to intercept messages meant for someone else "Dad we made it! I told you it would be safe" So offers very little beyond the weird dystopian "another dimension" world that the game is set around.
Find it as useless as paying arc points for a basketball hoop tbh lol
