Why do my tools stop working?

They have 'durability', they aren't broken, but randomly I can't use my tools. Not even my crowbar. I right click and nothing happens. I can still throw things, move stuff in my inventory, etc. The tools just don't work. Not the scrapper, crowbar, etc. It feels like a glitch, but I'm still new to this game, so is there something I'm missing?

That DOES sound like a bug. Does it show the tool-interaction use? does it even 'swing crowbar' or 'rev the scrapper', etc?

This has happened to me quite often, maybe 8 times give or take. I haven't been able to exactly pin down why this bug occurs, but it happens right after I craft a tool, and it MAY have something to do with your hotbar being full, but I could just be losing my mind. To be clear, it definitely is a bug, and if you are in your garage you can just save and quit and return to your game and itll be fixed, if you are out exploring, then honestly no clue, have been lucky enough to not experience it then. I doubt we are the only people that this has happened to, and I bet itll be fixed in no time. Hope this helps:)

Do you happen to have a controller plugged in? I was swapping back and forth between controller and mouse and keyboard when I ran into that. I'd laid down the controller with the trigger slightly pressed. Mouse clicks wouldn't register to activate tools until the controller's axis was back at rest.

Okay, so having encountered it a few times myself, - I think I see what's happening.

Game thinks you're running. You can't use tools while running. Tap the shift key a few times to clear up any phantom-shift presses. It's kinda bizarre how many games this is a issue in.

I had the same issue, but with mounting the part on the car.

The bug just happened to me and this fixed it.

I had the same issue. Keyboard + Mouse for non-driving and Xbox controller for Driving. I had left the garage on the first mission. Took my time looting everything, scanning, reading logs. And just before the antenna my interact button stopped working (left click, RB). Could not use tools or place the sphere in my car. Had to abandon the mission that caused even more issues. Ended up starting a new game and loosing a hour and a half of work. Oh well, them's the breaks.

I also get this bug. Turning away and then back towards the target, or swapping tools really fast refreshes your interaction state for a workaround.

i have tools randomly stop working i just swap them out sometimes take them off my list and put them back on it fixes it. you can also throw the tool on the ground and pick it back up... try that.

Nothing listed above fixed the issue for me
What did work is going to craft bench and craft any item!
After that I was finally able to fill my car with fuel from canister
