Shooting stars

A few times now, after opening the portal and calling the storm, I've seen yellow shooting stars fly across the sky and land somewhere on the map. They create a little purple triangle logo on the ARC device screen, but I haven't been able to find anything on the ground corresponding to it. I think I might have gotten corrupted energy from one? Anyone know what these are or how they work?

It's called a payload, it contains a peculiar part (unrepairable but higher stats) and various rarer items or tools. Access the items through a slot on either side of it.

In my experience it shows at around 40% map coverage.
So it is reasonable to stay in the middle of a map just in front of the edge so you can grab those fast and easy. And they are really worth it.

I've gotten one of these without the storms. Just crashed in front of me at random while I was casually driving. Could be just more likely as the junction is collapsing, but it can happen otherwise too.
