Are all maps hand-crafted or not?
I assumed for a while that most non-story maps were procedurally generated, especially as the developers of the game had a big tech interview about how they used procedural landscape generation in the game. However, I've definitely run into the same exact map more than once. For instance, you've probably seen this map by now, and I found it again, rotated: https://i.imgur.com/5ecQOkQ.jpeg

I know that elements like resources can be randomly shuffled around but are the maps themselves just static? Are there in fact just a limited number of hand-crafted maps after all, then? The game isn't quite clear.

I imagine they used procedural generation to build the maps in the first place and then touched up their favorite ones by hand after.

Randomly generating the map every time can lead to some really ugly or messed up layouts that could ruin a run.

The maps are consistent in layout, however, there's a ton of randomization at play:
- The entry and exit points are randomized
- Resources are randomized
- The per-junction stability/weather is randomized.

I find I'm generally not doing the same maps back to back often enough for it to ever feel repetitive, and the randomization makes each junction feel unique.

I think I'm starting to recognise certain map geography but the difference paved/unpaved tunnels and structure density changes. One thing I think they do to mess with you is rotate your view of the map on the arc device.
