Is there rare materials when the storm closes in?
I completely forgot to set a gateway exit thing so was literally driving back and forth in the storm wondering why the gateways would shut off when i got near. I saw like a purple icon on the map that wasn't there before. I realised then about activating a gateway and my car was too beat up to investigate the icon, so now i'm curious what it was.

Curious about that myself. They seem to spawn or rather fall from the sky sometimes when the storm comes. You can see them moving on the map when they arrive. Sadly none of the ones I saw so far fell in a retrievable position so far.

For me the purple icon was a Payload, a big radioactive nuke. I only had about 3 seconds to scan it and run away, but it was logged into the Resources tab and it says RECOMMENDED TOOL: HANDS. But I didn't see what you could interact with

There's a panel on the side of it that you can interact with. I've only encountered one, since the rest I saw were on the wrong side of the map while the storm was closing in, but the one I encountered was just a storage unit full of semi-rare materials.

They also always drop a "Peculiar" car part (Star Icon) These car parts seem to have better HP. Not sure if they have any other special bonuses. Deconstructing a Peculiar part gave no resources.

These satellites fall when at least 50% of the map is covered in storm. If you're on casual supply run, I'd recommend sticking around, because this is the best source of high-level material in early game: plasma cutters, scissors, armored car parts, abundance of kits, etc.
The radiation damage is quite low if you keep your car above the red mark, so just grab a putty just in case and go on hunting.

Great, thanks for the info everyone. Looking forward to tracking one down now.

wait, so what exactly happens if you don't leave a zone and the storm closes in on you? Is it just radiation? I've never stuck around because it looks like the apocalypse is about to happen

The yellow is mild radiation. The red is extreme radiation, which will melt your car under a minute.

I drove through 20 or 30 seconds of red storm once, with only steel panels. I can't give you a really accurate figure, as I was feeling a bit stressed so my time sense was off.

Peculiar parts dont provide anything from deconstructed and cant be repaired, but as you said have better HP. basically, they exist as emergency supplies. if you happen to break a panel or a door and are lucky enough to find one in a payload or an investigator truck, you can install it to prevent instability from poisoning you inside your car
