Yeah pretty sure the items with the love hearts on them cannot be broken down to smaller parts.
When you say "scrap" them, are you using the scrapper tool, or some other option in your garage? Looks like if you were using the scrapper it would take a lot of materials since you'd be having to build new scrappers a lot.
I chalked it up to a prank by the friendly dumpster, and I can't really hold that against it considering he keeps giving me copper wire when i need it lol.
There is a setting you can change in "gameplay settings" which stops you losing any items on a failed run. There are loads of customisation options there such as permanent lights despite battery drain, no car damage etc. It's nice that they added options so people can tailor the game to them and work around parts that they might find annoying.
