What is that 8-bit screen for?

On the dashboard, right below the abilities interface, there's a little 8-bit display that shows animations. What is that for? Is it just decorative or is it telling me something?

it's like a tamagotchi but with just one button, I try and press it often to keep the little guy happy

I remember the first time I noticed the small screen, car gave me a heart when I came back to my car. It would be cool to be able to interact with it a bit more, but I love the little bit of charm it brought and makes me feel like the car has some personality.
