Night length
EDIT: After looking at replies and testing some stuff for myself (feel kinda dumb I didn't notice the in game clock before) it seems that 1 in game minute passes about every 16 seconds, regardless of if you are in the garage or on a trip. The faster nights option speeds this up to about 4 seconds, so 4x as fast. The hours shown on the map are exactly how far ahead the clock will jump when traveling between areas.

I do definitely agree that it seems like nights feel longer than they really are due to how dark dawn, dusk, and various weather types are. But it seems like the actual time for night isn't longer than day from what I can tell after testing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hoping either a dev sees this and can answer, or someone knows the answer, or even that someone just has a good hunch.
How long is night during the default day night cycle? Is it longer than day?
Additionally how much shorter is night with the shortened nights option turned on?
Personally I found myself constantly in night time and almost never had daylight, but if the shorter nights go too far in the other direction that also wouldn't feel too great to me, so I'm just curious in finding out some info on the nights in this game.
I don't know the exact time for a full cycle, I know it's very slow, it feels almost like real time while you're in the garage, but it definitely moves faster in the zones.
If you look at the route planner, you'll see most areas are in terms of distance to time, around 3 hours, so 2 zones is 6 hours travel, plus your time in each zone.
Depending on where you're going, you can sort of time it...
Like if you're going to mid zone, that's around 9 hours , so leave the garage around 3am, get to zone 1 around 6am while the sun is rising, collect energy as quick as you can and head to zone 2, ideally you'll be there around 10-11, and if you've got 2+ energy, you're good to just push through to your destination zone where it hopefully it'll be around 2-3pm, and you've got some daylight.
There are probably better ways to time it out, leaving earlier and just dealing with the initial / "easy" zones in the night, and arriving in the morning to the mid or central zones, for example. It's all about planning.
AFAIK the drives go in the sequence of:
night > midnight > dawn > morning > noon > dusk > night again
If it's dawn in the garage, the next area will also be dawn, and then in the next junction it will be morning. Do note that this is what I've observed, leaving most junctions before the exit storm arrives.
I do also feel that we spend more time during night because of how dark dawn and dusk are, but I think that's a design decision by the devs since the game is supposed to be kind of scary :frightenedDog:
I am sure you are probably right but,I don't know for sure, cause I left the in the morning, next junction it was night, and night at next (which is suppose to be 6 hours or travel time), and Still night as I went through other junctions, to go through the wall quest then daylight, and the next then last area it was night again. I am not a fan of the SO Long of nights. Especially in a new area it seems like it is always night for me and I try so hard to time it so the area I am visiting for the first time is daylight and it just doesn't work out at all. I wish there was a setting to have more daylight than night. ( i have already got it check to shorter nights.) thanks for your insight though.
After testing I determined that each minute in game takes about 16 seconds, faster nights causes night time minutes to only last about 4 seconds. Nights seem longer than they really are because dawn, dusk, and weather patterns are all very dark, but the actual length of day vs night doesn't seem incorrect. The travel time shown on the map is the exact time the in game clock will move forwards.
Also there is a clock in the car's status screen that I didn't notice before making this post.
There is daylight in this game?
I'm shocked!
