There's an entire thread where people have tested what you can put into it to convert it into something else.

Only thing I took notice of is you can use them to convert Plasma into Tree Candy if you haven't unlocked the Tree Candy zone yet, it's a decent way to get some early.

On top of swapping materials with it, you can drive up to it and it will charge your battery much like the beating heart repairs your car.
