I hate to break it to you, but they aren't real. You don't have to be a keyboard warrior for their eternal happiness. It's okay if some people play games to enjoy aesthetic.
Game play wise they wanted you to be able to keep getting quests to earn stuff but it could have been handled better. Like maybe they send a cute little messenger to their old spot to pass on messages and ask for things. Or they ascend and are gone but come back some days to say hi and do a quest to relive memories with you. That would have also made the DLC less awkward, once both in a location are ascended then they could trade back and forth.
Not trashing the game. I'll likely be getting CG2 when it comes out. It seems like it might be delayed to next year since they are having trouble finding artists and programmers, but that's speculation based on the little put out on twitter.
