What is the difference between harvesting and feeding animals for badges?

I finally unlocked the Elite badge for Animal Raising Tier 1, which has an objective of "Feed Tier 1 animals 500 times." However, I noticed I'm only at 80% for Elite Animal Farming Tier 1, which has an objective of "Harvest 500 Tier 1 animals." Does this mean 500 unique animals? I don't understand how else my harvest numbers could be behind my feeding numbers, since every time you feed a spirit animal, you also harvest essence from it.

Whenever you feed an animal, there is a chance that the animal evolves into the next stage. This happens after feeding the animal but before harvesting it. So whenever an animal evolves after feeding it, you gain progress for the feeding badge of the previous level but also gain progress for the harvesting badge of the next level.
Therefore, the badge for harvesting tier 1 animals is harder to obtain than the badge for feeding tier 1 animals.
