Lab level sand issue
Honestly I don't want to put down 24 sand pumps to get the sand to start lowering on the lab level, it's how the math works. (350kl/min each pump on drain, fill is 8200kl/min)

As I can see that generating a ton of lag just to fuel them all properly.

So my quesiton is, is the 24 needed, or is there some way I can use less?

that's really how much you need, you can stack them on top of each other and you'll want to feed them pure diesel I got to the point where I actually had 32 pumps going, good news is next level is much easier also you'll want two towers of 12 can't really fit 24 high

There is also a mod for sand levels that adjusts this if it’s really stopping you

I ended up with 33 pumps on 14…. Just because it would have taken forever for the sand to go down with just 24

You could use the mod by Casper to adjust pump/refill rates.

I have 25 and its still not going down and I have 30 on level 15 and its still not going down

Those 30 on 15 should lower sand.
Check the sand (pump) left for each individual one if it's > 0
If not you have to replace them further downwards.
Use the mole to dig down to where sanded appears again.

If there is sand left, check whether there's less than 500 sand stored in such pump.

Make sure you have good flow on the belts removing the sand, otherwise you extraction rates will fall.

Have found that can use about 3 pumps to a normal belt. Seems to work pretty good for me.

with sand still > 0 on a level (and that specific pump), they create 100/min of sesa sand (50/min when drained, for upkeep).

a single max 710/min inserter placing items to/moving from an mk3 belt can process ~400 items/min (to/from contaners and machines 720).
it's feasible to use up to three stack inserter to almost max out a belt<>inserter combo with almost 700/min.

This allows to handle up to 6, maybe 7 pumps with a single belt.

Inserters and belts are slower as items take time to move from/to and inserter's drop/pick up spot while they can grab/drop a full stack when accessing black box inventories.

I didn’t bother with running a belt for the sand, I places regular inserters (unpowered ones) putting the sand into containers on one side, with 2 inserters inputting unrefined diesel in, 1 inserter when I switched to Pure (level 14/15)
So I only needed a single mk3 belt to feed my pumps fuel.

Exception being level 12, I was sending Mining charges and fuel to it, and getting scrap ore chunks and carbon bricks sent down to which ever floor needed them at the time.

If I needed sand I’d just go get it from the containers

ha yeah, I only got myself some sand from 12 and all other floors I also let the pumps fill containers, inserters powered by a set of batteries left from my test for the 33GJ bug.

On the Lab level the sand has not budged at all, and the speed flickers between 0 and 350 and on the level after that it does the same thing. the sand isnt moving and the speed flickers from 0-500, as I said in my final review update I am done with it.

Peeking around places off Steam, I can see the sand levels are a huge problem for folks. Likely hurting the game as well, as a lot of folks tend to dislike dealing with it.

I have lowered all the floors with 20k left on 16... Yes the sand is a nightmare especially when your accumulators stop working completely and do nothing...
I would be happy to not need carbon from 14 so I need to pump 2 places at once to lower them...
Pumping is easy... Its the 100 chest full of sand that's annoying...
