Stack them side ways next to each other. Once you unlock the Water Wheel you can place those next to one to make a line of three automated.

As an idiot who didn't realize how this works: You have to place cranks side-by-side for this to function. This is also how Water Wheels function - if there isn't enough space for you to put a power tiles just under the middle of the wheel, you can't really use a water wheel, because you have to attach cranks to a water wheel the same way you would to eachother. Water wheels don't generate power if they don't have an attached crank to turn, but at least the crank attached to a water wheel doesn't need to be turned manually anymore.

Water Wheels don't need power floor under them. They can infinitely be connected in single line together. Crank gens are the only ones that need to be on connected power floor (each one must have floor under it ).
1 Waterwheel in a line, will power 2 crank generators (of any tier). Maybe higher tier water wheels exist later that power more, but at this point it's 1 to 2.
IE: 5 Water Wheels placed in water, can power 10 crank generators, as long as there is a connection made in a single line between both sets.

Has anyone played with how long you can make a chain yet? I have 11 water wheels in line with 2 mark II crank generators and 4 normal ones, and the wattage is only 2273kW. I would have expected 880kWx2 + 165kWx4 = 2420kW. I can't add any more water wheels in this line. It seems like there are diminishing returns for a "single line", and that they want you to make multiple lines of wheels/cranks?

Also, when I have the 2 MK IIs in line with 2 water wheels, I only get 880kW, but if I add two more wheels, it goes up to 1760kW, so it seems like it's 1 wheel to two MK I cranks, or 2 wheels to 1 MK II crank. I haven't seen higher tier wheels yet.

1 water wheel, 2 generators. any more than 2 is a waste of space

Iirc that is the correct ratio that was mentioned on Discord
